First Lady Michelle Obama sported a new haircut on Thursday, her 49th birthday, while meeting with one of eight Citizen Co-Chairs for the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
David Hall, seen above, was on track to receive his pilot license from the Air Force until he dis-enrolled for “homosexual conduct” in 2002 after one of his fellow cadets outed him for being gay, per the PIC. Since then, Hall fought for Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal, which President Obama completed in July of 2011.
A few weeks ago, a few of us headed over to the Supreme Court to retrieve a suitcase. It belonged to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and it contained, effectively, her family history in photographs. We sat in the kitchen in her chambers over her lunch break. She ate a bowl of soup and told us stories about the photos.
NPR’s Nina Totenberg went back a few weeks later to get Sotomayor’s full story (airing throughout the week): a childhood in tenement housing in the Bronx; a diagnosis with diabetes; her father’s death to alcoholism; her cousin’s death to drugs; and her divorce.
She also shares memories of huge family parties, cooking with her grandmother and receiving a scholarship to Princeton (and her corollary thoughts on affirmative action).
Without further delay, check out the presentation, in which Sotomayor shares her photos and stories.
(P.S. Hey, other justices: We’re currently accepting suitcases of photos.)

Meet Vladimir Franz, an opera composer and painter - tattooed from head to toe, his face a warrior-like mix of blue, green and red. He’s also running in a surprising third place ahead of this week’s Czech presidential elections. Dramatic pictures of five young children and their grandmother huddled together under a jetty in the Tasmanian town of Dunalley were captured by their grandfather Tim Holmes as the family took shelter from Australia’s wildfires in the water to escape the flames. The family was forced to stay in the water for several hours as homes around them were razed to the ground. The pictures, taken on 4 January have just been released. Click on the image for more
