Yahoo promises not to 'screw it up' over $1.1bn Tumblr deal

guardian:

Web pioneer reveals details of acquisition of blogging platform, as site’s 26-year-old founder tells staff: ‘Fuck yeah’. By Charles Arthur and Josh Halliday

Latest story on Guardian just up

OY. So if Yahoo does mess up Tumblr (which I fully expect BTW given Flickr), what then? Do y’all have any ideas? Where do we go then with our gifs and links and such?

Increasingly, I notice how good movies look when projected at private corporate screenings rooms and how bad movies look projected at major multiplexes — even at press screenings, where you’d think the staff would be on their best behavior. In the last few weeks I’ve seen two new blockbusters in 3D; one at a Times Square multiplex, and one at a studio’s private screening room. The multiplex blockbuster looked murky; its nighttime action scenes were basically gibberish. The privately screened blockbuster looked magnificent; even in 3D, it practically glistened, and the low-light action sequences were easy to follow.

A Troubling Statement on the State of Movie Projection | Criticwire

Well, this is likely the reason why The Hobbit screening I attended was so lousy.

Families get pennies on the dollar in the settlement for having been the victims of illegal activities or mistakes in the banks’ activities. You now know individual cases where the banks violated the law and you’re not going to tell the homeowners or at least it’s not clear if you’re going to do that?

It’s Equal Pay Day – a day that shows how far into 2013 women must work to earn what men earned in 2012. After all, women still make just 77 cents to a man’s dollar. This gender gap affects women (and their families) from all backgrounds, ages, and at all levels of education – and it’s unacceptable. Reblog if you think it’s time for Congress to support paycheck fairness. Equal work deserves equal pay!

REGARDING WINNING THE LOTTERY
How heavy is the oversized cardboard check & is the winner strong enough to hold it & will the local news show her face & will her smile be forced & will her family ask to borrow money & will they ever pay it back & will her morals change & will she start volunteering & will she dream of falling out of a private jet & will she land safely in her pile of money & will she always land safely in her pile of money?

the thing about this particular brand of low-key wealth is that it can lead to a false sense of self, on both a micro and a macro level. Consumption is still consumption even if it’s less conspicuous. Class may be harder to see here, but that doesn’t make it any less real. Mark Zuckerberg’s still a billionaire, even if he’s wearing a hoodie and jeans. And if you don’t feel or look rich, you don’t necessarily feel the same sense of obligation that a traditional rich person does or should: Noblesse oblige is, after all, dependent on a classical idea of who is and is not the nobility. As that starts to fall away, obligation — to culture, to the future, to each other — begins to disappear, too.

Welcome to 21st century America, where chances are always good that you’re paying a huge corporation for something you want. Or, even more uncomfortably, using your native enthusiasms — as expressed in your tweets, Facebook likes, interest in casting tidbits and trailers and posters and interviews — to inadvertently shill for that huge corporation. In this case, paying the man may result in a “Veronica Mars” movie that would not otherwise exist. If this Kickstarter project succeeds it will be a model for huge corporations and creators to continue making shows based not on the size of the audience, but on the passion of that audience — and, absolutely, how much that passion drives pocketbooks.
