At first I read this wrong

Seen on APL website:

Effective October 1, 2009 the Austin Public Library will charge $1.00 per item for holds not picked up or not canceled within the 10 calendar day hold period.
Upon first reading, I thought it said they were charging $1 per hold, period. Man, that would add up for me! I don’t think I’ve ever missed the hold period … but then again, I go to the library at least once a week to pick up or drop off books. I hope this doesn’t count when the library says you have a hold, but you really don’t. I have had this happen twice to me; someone perhaps has taken books off the hold shelf and checked them out for themselves? If you *really* want my hold copy of Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict, by all means, take it.

I also hope this means the hold system gets some refining. Sometimes I don’t get email notice until hours after I’ve seen on the library website that I have a hold waiting for me. And when the library has limited hours, this matters.
