Can we talk about this movie? Everything about it is beautiful (the location, the actors, the style, the composition, etc.), but I don’t know that I completely understand it. Maybe I’m not supposed to.

Incendies - 2010
Just finished watching this amazing film. So many twists and turns, my mind is blown. Plus, nice use of Radiohead.

Day Twenty-Four: Favorite female romantic relationship
I’m totally blanking on the character names, but I like the portrayal in this film of the relationship between Antonia’s daughter and the teacher.
El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes), 2009. I watched this wonderful drama/mystery/thriller/romance yesterday afternoon after my weekend in the Hill Country. It is so frickin’ good; if you haven’t seen it already, rent it NOW.

Caramel, 2007. Dir. Nadine Labaki. [available instantly on Netflix - which is how I watched it last night]

Antonia’s Line, 1995. So I feel somewhat idiotic - all this time I thought this movie was about a fashion designer (her line, get it?). Anyway, I happened to find it tonight on Netflix Instant and I can’t recall the last time I’ve seen such strong, honest portrayals of female characters in a movie. It’s like this movie is feminist just by showing the lives of women. And that’s not even the tip of the iceberg … there are many deep themes (incest, mental health, sexuality, gender roles, motherhood, sibling rivalry, depression, etc.) tossed into this movie about Antonia and her descendants. For a movie with what seems like a simple plot, it really packs a punch. Wow.

Rented this movie from Netflix after klodt posted the trailer for it months ago. Nine Queens did not go the way I expected it to, and I love it so much for that. Strongly recommended - especially if you like heist movies.
