Why Every Texan Knows Exactly Where West, Texas Is

My uncle taught and then was principal at the high school in West in the late 80s/early 90s.  So I feel like I know West slightly better than just the Czech Stop (plus, we used to stop at the Dairy Queen far more often).

Thinking of you, West!

Learning How To Code-Switch: Humbling, But Necessary

nprcodeswitch:

Eric Deggans learned the hard way that saying “guys” wasn’t cool around some of his friends. What are your code-switching fail stories?

I hadn’t known there was a term for it, but I guess my dad code-switches.  He talks one way up in Austin and another when he’s around the folks in the rural south Texas town he works in.  He drawls a little more down there, and tends to drop his g’s.  It’s always seemed a little “aw shucks” to me, and not his authentic self.  But given the amount of time he’s spent down there, perhaps it is more a real part of him than I had thought.

Scientific Explanations for Why Spoilers Are So Horrible

Spoilers suck because they remind us that a story is just a story. It’s hard to get transported when you already know where you’ll end up—in real life, you don’t have that knowledge.

I still tease my sister because she long ago spoiled Mission: Impossible for me.  When it came out, I mainly wanted to see it because Kristin Scott-Thomas was in it.  Leah warned me that she isn’t in it for long (*SPOILER*because her character gets killed off in the first 15 minutes*/SPOILER*) and I got SO MAD.  I never saw the movie.

Your Sister’s Sister (2011) - Directed by Lynn Shelton

Whenever I see movies with a real and genuine depiction of a relationship between sisters, I want to call or text my sister.  The only reason I didn’t do so after watching this one was because it was late-ish last night when my friend and I finished the DVD.

Plus, I had already called Leah after finding a sweet card she had sent me in 2000 (I’m packing for my move on Saturday and finally tackled the stacks of paper on my desk).

Places in the Heart, 1984.
I’m going to write something longer for Lone Star Cinema on Slackerwood, but it probably won’t include all this:
So many feelings and memories tied up with this movie. At one point during my viewing of the movie tonight something reminded me of my “aunt” Euna*, one of my favorite relatives who died some years ago.  I think it was the earrings that Margaret wears to a dance that brought her to mind. Plus the fact that the film is based in Depression era Texas, and Euna was a young lady in Telephone** at that time, I believe.
Anyway, that made me start to feel maudlin and then the last scene made me bawl.  I knew what was coming and it still hit me.
If I had a “My emotions! My emotions!” gif of Troy from Community, I’d stick it right here.
*really my great-grandfather’s sister, so technically my great-great aunt
**yes, there is a town named Telephone in Texas.

Stupid habit I need to break

nellienellie:

Laughing when something is funny, then looking around for affirmation to make sure other people are laughing too, and if they’re not laughing, stopping.

LAUGH LIKE NOBODY’S WATCHING, NELLIE

I saw Moonrise Kingdom a second time (thanks, Mom*) on July 4th and the 60-something man sitting next to me kept looking at me whenever I would giggle or laugh.  Which, honestly, wasn’t as often as I had during the first viewing, BUT WHATEVER.  I just ignored him and kept laughing.

*My mom got so excited about the use of this song in the film that she exclaimed (louder than she meant to, I think) that she hadn’t heard it in years…

Lunch
Texas Gulf Black Drum from Quality Seafood Market

My parents go to Quality Seafood about once a week.  I enjoy it every now and then, but I am disappointed they offer okra but no honey.  My dad raised me to eat fried okra with honey, and that’s the way I prefer it.
I have no idea where he picked this up.  When I would eat okra with honey in college, I’d get some strange looks in the cafeteria. But srsly guys, it’s the best.
