Random things I memorized from 1990’s TV advertising

Hello, I’m Young MC with a story to tell
I just got a free cup from Taco Bell
And MTV makes the whole thing fun
Buy a giant cup of Pepsi and you’ll get one
three cups in all, so don’t stand still
And if you buy a (giant?) cup, you get a free refill…

I remember the words from this Taco Bell ad and have forgotten far more important things. Such is my memory.

It gave me goosebumps, so I’d say it does a good job.

NBC’s Comedy Lineup Returns! (by NBC)

See what I mean? What is going on over there?!

They didn’t even choose the funniest lines from existing shows. And all these new shows look awful if I judge them by this ad.

I won’t complain too much because at least Parks and Rec gets a soundbite.  I just wish it were funnier.

Sex Doesn’t Always Sell: Why Female Olympians Don’t Score Big Endorsement Deals

Olympic swimmer and gold medal winner Missy Franklin made news with the announcement that she will be retaining her amateur status for the next four years. As such, she “stands to lose millions in endorsement deals,” reports Forbes.
But a comparison of Franklins’ earning potential to that of Michael Phelps underscores the pervasive underrepresentation of female athletes in advertising. Not a single female athlete appeared on the 2011 Sports Illustrated list of the 50 highest-earning U.S. athletes, a fact that’s highlighted in a forthcoming study in the Journal of Brand Management. A Turner report found that, of the sports figures featured as endorsers on 11.9 percent of television commercials, only 3 percent are women. […]
The study makes the troubling accusation that female consumers are jealous of spokeswomen who are made out to be paragons of strength and attractiveness, suggesting that’s one reason why ads focused on female athletes’ physicality are unsuccessful.

Seriously, if your high heels “kill” your feet - don’t fucking wear them! There’s nothing worse than a woman hobbling around in heels that are too tall, too wobbly, or just too painful.

This reminded me of a song Kat Edmonson sang last night with the lyric, “I’ll go through life/wearing entirely sensible shoes…”

Mike’s Hard Lemonade has a funny FB campaign (Get Your Nombre) where you type in your name and a mariachi band sings your name. This is what “Josh” sounds like. I laughed.

THEY DON’T HAVE ELIZABETH! Now all these memories are flooding back from when I was a kid and I could never find a personalized souvenir item.  Sure, there would be a Liz keychain, or maybe a Beth pencil, but Elizabeth? Far too rare.

JCPenney is featuring a same-sex couple in its Fathers’ Day ad, following One Million Moms’ failed boycott of the store for bringing on Ellen DeGeneres.

Their new ad campaign is the main reason I went to JC Penney this past weekend.  Before Monday, it had been years since I stepped into the chain.
I do want to point out that they had a same-sex couple in their Mothers’ Day advertising as well.
