What women do in the books mentioned here doesn’t consist of survival so much as sabotage. They throw bricks and rocks and flaming bottles into the chinks of the masculine world machine, then pick up a gun and fire into the turning gears. If rape and other sexual violence, religious servitude, and the politically determined inaccessibility of contraception can be seen as acts of war, stories like these may not just be a means of escapism. In the mind’s eye, they might be weapons, to be picked up, opened, and deployed.

Yesterday they raided radio stations; today we have explosions at journalists’ homes.
There is an open effort to terrorize the media, a vital part of our democracy.
Simos Kedikoglou, spokesperson, Greek Government, in response to an attack against five journalists by a group called Lovers of Lawlessness. The group claims the journalists are sympathetic to the austerity measures being imposed on the country due to its economic crisis. New York Times, Journalists in Greece Are Becoming Targets.
The News: On Friday, attackers detonated gas canisters at the homes of an editor, two broadcasters, a crime reporter and a former journalist who’s now spokesman for a government agency privatizing Greek assets.
“These attacks are the most visible expression of an increasingly dangerous climate for all journalists, who are being turned into the scapegoats of a crisis they are just analysing,” said Reporters Without Borders in a statement.
As the Times reports, “Activism by far-left groups appears to be on the rise after a series of attacks and threats against journalists last year by Golden Dawn, the far-right neo-facist group.”
No one was injured in the attacks.

Two years ago, a mentally ill young man shot me in the head, killed six of my constituents, and wounded 12 others. Since that terrible day, America has seen 11 more mass shootings – but no response from Congress to prevent gun violence. After the massacre of 20 children and six of their teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary though, it’s clear: This time must be different.
Americans for Responsible Solutions will encourage elected officials to stand up for solutions to prevent gun violence and protect responsible gun ownership by communicating directly with the constituents that elect them.

Anupama Ramakrishnan, 33, who is studying sociology at Delhi University, blamed what she called “a deeply held sense of patriarchy” for the attack.
“This is not about sexuality,” she said. “It is about power and violence.”

Why do we, as opposed to every other industrialized country including Canada, regulate guns less than we do cars? We aren’t allowed to put traceable markings on bullets. Gun lobby groups fight for “cop-killer” bullets and for the right to bring loaded guns into our churches, schools, and courthouses. It’s time to get rid of the patently illogical idea equating guns with freedom—unfettered access to guns actually makes us less free. In Korea, the risks for bodily harm are the same as they are everywhere, but not by gun violence. For instance, even during the most violent student protests, as a bystander in the wrong place at the wong time, the worst thing that happened to me was being teargassed. What kind of democracy can we have if a Senator wanting to hold an event where she can hear the concerns of her constituents ends up being shot point-blank in the head?
