In 1876, two women published cake recipes in support of their chosen presidential candidates (in 2008, I reinvented them for the primary). But that was before women won the right to vote. I thought suffrage would get us out of the kitchen. As much as I want to dismiss the fluff, I cannot help but read deep symbolic meaning in their respective cookies. Ann’s focuses on an American brand owned by a huge conglomerate, while Michelle’s boasts dark and white chocolate (I mean, c’mon) … and they’re made by her daughters’ godmother. This is one woman who is not claiming to be at home baking cookies, no matter what her husband is running for.
