It is pretty freaking sad that the wives of our presidential candidates still have to do crap like this. (And it is just wives. If Clinton runs again, you can bet we will never see Bubba fake-baking-and-smiling for the camera.) There’s an interesting historic basis to baking-as-political-expression, though. In 1876, two women published cake recipes in support of their chosen presidential candidates (in 2008, I reinvented them for the primary). But that was before women won the right to vote. I thought suffrage would get us out of the kitchen.
As much as I want to dismiss the fluff, I cannot help but read deep symbolic meaning in their respective cookies. Ann’s focuses on an American brand owned by a huge conglomerate, while Michelle’s boasts dark and white chocolate (I mean, c’mon) … and they’re made by her daughters’ godmother. This is one woman who is not claiming to be at home baking cookies, no matter what her husband is running for.
