The healing power of Jane Austen - Telegraph →
Sometimes the troubled and eventful lives we read about simply help us to put our own lives in perspective (and no, I don’t mean; Being Jordan, by Katie Price). I am well aware that Austen’s characters are fictional. But it is impossible to read Pride and Prejudice, and consider the lot of the Bennett sisters, or follow the travails of Mansfield Park’s Fanny Price without feeling immense gratitude...

COMPLETE LIST OF RECIPIENTS OF THE 69th ANNUAL... →
How much do I love that Modern Family is first on the list?!?! PBS won a lot (not surprising!). Other notable inclusions: No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Glee, npr.org, among others. I think the Peabodys are my favorite award. They were one of the few organizations to recognize the awesomeness of Homicide: Life on the Street.

“It baffles me that he thinks he has any right to weigh in on such a decision when this is an institution of higher learning,” says Otte of [Texas Lt. Gov] Dewhurst’s statement, likening it to having the state’s second highest-ranking official issue an unsolicited critique of a college English paper. “It was never intended to be an attack on Christians by the playwright or me. If he [Dewhurst]...

House Democrats report increased threats since... →
House Democrats are concerned about their security due to increased threats since Sunday’s vote to pass the health care bill, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Wednesday. Hoyer told a news conference that “a significant number, meaning over 10,” had reported either threats, vandalism or other incidents. Capitol Police officials have briefed House Democrats on reporting...

Calorie Count Disclosure And The Health Care Bill:... →
More than 200,000 fast food and other chain restaurants will have to include calorie counts on menus, menu boards and even drive-throughs. The new law, which applies to any restaurant with 20 or more locations, directs the Food and Drug Administration to create a new national standard for menu labeling, superseding a growing number of state and city laws. President Barack Obama signed the health...

'Spillover' Violence ranges beyond the U.S.-Mexico... →
A generic, well-manicured and spoon-fed explanation of spillover makes it extremely difficult to swallow, whether we are actually being spilled on, saturated, or could expect flood stages. The U.S. at bare minimum deserves a better threat assessment by at least accurately standardizing the true measurement process. Drug violence and murder with impunity is what it is, regardless of where it takes...

The social consequences of the health care reform... →
But is social network expression worth the cost of damaged professional perception? Regardless of which side of the health care reform debate I sit on, it doesn’t make me feel good to see those folks with whom I do business chastising others for being “unAmerican” or telling others to get out of the country if they don’t like it. It shows an immature side of an otherwise very pulled together and...
